Personal Development at Alfred Sutton Primary School
Personal development at Alfred Sutton is built around our 6 ‘Core Values’, which are used to ensure character education is at the core of everything we do. These values ensure the staff and children regularly reflect on their development and overall behaviour in all aspects of school life. Values assemblies each week lead to discussions around the school values and how the children can embody these values in all areas of their lives, in and outside of school. The Core Values inform our behaviour curriculum, which we use as a part of our character education, educating the children about pro-social behaviour.
British Values
At Alfred Sutton, British Values are firmly embedded in our every day practices and policies. Children are taught about Democracy and experience a voting system in the election of the School Council. These children are pivotal in providing a voice for the pupils across the school regarding school improvements. Children develop an understanding of the rule of law and individual liberty within our school code of conduct and our restorative approach to behaviour management. We foster a mutual respect and tolerance of all through a focus on equality and by celebrating the diversity of our school throughout the year.
Awards and Recognition
Alfred Sutton prides itself on developing the whole child and ensuring children grow with confidence and self-belief. To support this, we regularly recognise various aspects of non-academic life. Each term, 3-4 children per class are awarded a Sutton Six badge for the value that has been a focus during the term.
Each week, 2 children are chosen per class to receive a Plane Tree Award. These recognise above and beyond effort and conduct through the week.
We also have a housepoint system where children can receive recognition for various acts around school. At the end of each term, the winning house gathers for a celebration.
PSHE
We follow the DfE framework for Relationships and Health Education and our resources come from a range of sources including Kapow. This learning puts a focus on ensuring children learn about healthy relationships and how to safeguard their own mental and physical health. Please find the PSHE policy on the policy page of the website.
